Clinical hypothyroidism (HO) is an insulin-resistant state (1234). Studies in vivo, in hypothyroid patients (12) and in vitro, in tissues isolated from hypothyroid rats (34) have established that this is due to defects in the ability of insulin to increase glucose utilization in peripheral tissues, mainly muscle.
